Can I train my one year old puppy using the clicker method?
Hi! I always wanted to teach my dog with a clicker but he doesn’t seem to get it. He knows a lot of stuff now, but I want him to learn by clicker training. Could someone really explain the concept to me and tell me how and why it works? Or give me a resource for the info? It looks like a great way to train. We are getting another puppy in a month and want to train him with the clicker method too.
www.clickersolutions.com is the best place for information. I’m assuming you want to shape your dog’s behavior. It is so funny, I swear you can actually watch the dog think! The first thing you have to do is to “charge” the clicker (meaning, teach your dog a click equals a treat). Once your dog knows what the click means, then you decide before you start whatever you want to teach your dog. (I train 1 behavior at a time.) Let’s say you want to teach your dog to touch a target. You put the target on the ground at a location defined. You have the clicker in one hand and a handful of treats in the other. You’ll wait for the dog to go in the right direction. So, let’s say your dog turns his head toward the target you click and treat. When your dog learns that the right action gets the click, (and thus a treat), he will quickly learn that he is in control of the click, and will begin the correct behaviors.
