I shall not want to get my puppy trained to be my therapy dog .. I live in Fairbanks, Alaska .. I'd like to help.?
What do you mean by the therapy dog? A therapy dog is trained, tested, licensed and insured so that he can visit hospitals and homes nursing with its owner to brighten patients. The three main organizations of the therapy dog in the United States are: http://deltasociety.org http://therapydogs.com http://tdi-dog.org Since you've made your question this way ( "trained to be my therapy dog), it seems that you intend not to make visits, but to use the dog as part of your own therapy. If you mean a dog for emotional support, no training beyond basic manners mandatory for all pet dogs is necessary. To be eligible for a dog of emotional support that you would have to be legally disabled. The only real reason to have a dog, a dog has emotional support would be to keep "No pets "Housing or to travel with her. Otherwise, they're no different pets. Be aware that neither therapy dogs, or dogs for emotional support can be taken anywhere that pet dogs are not permitted without the authorization of the facility owner. If you meant dog psychiatric assistance, again, you must first be legally disabled, which means that the psychiatric condition must be severe enough to prevent you from exercising the major activities of life. The dog must be individually trained to perform tasks that reduce your handicap. Training a service dog usually takes 18-24 months. Very few dogs have all the qualities needed to actually complete the training and become real service dogs. Statistically, less than a dog in a hundred has health, temperament, trainability and attributes biddability necessary to succeed in service work. Very few programs will have on the PET someone to train as service dog because the rate Success with a dog breed are not specifically for the work is very very low. So if you want a psychiatric service dog is best to request a program which trains them. Here is an article on how to do this: Here http://servicedogcentral.org/content/node/262 about differences between therapy dogs, dogs for emotional support and psychiatric service dogs: http://servicedogcentral.org/content/node/76
