A flirt pole is a great tool for training and exercise of a pit bull or any breed of dog. A flirt pole is a pole of rope and bait. The best aspect of using a flirt pole is that it can be used with any age or level of dog. Also because it does not require a large open area can be used in a small area.
A flirt pole is easy to construct. You can starting with the purchase of a whip crack of farm supplies or horse tack shops. At the end of a whip crack simply attach a old cloth or fabric of jute as a bait station for the dog. If you believe that the towel does not have enough weight, please add tennis ball hits two holes in it and threading the line through.
Although a whip crack is the easiest way to start, there are many other ways to build a flirt pole. Currently, I use a pole fiberglass tent with an old cotton rope. I used a PVC pipe, Bamboo, one branch of a tree in the past. Take a look at what you have slept in the garage or house and I am sure you will find something that can be used. Never use metal when setting the bait line too. Metal can be harmful to the teeth of dogs. Too, I generally use cotton rope I would not suggest using any equipment for the line that you are not comfortable with your dog chew.
Flirting with pole in hand, it is time for you and the dog outside. Find a place preferably on the dirt and the grass and hold the pole in one had while throwing the bait in front of the dog. Avoid using the cluster meeting on concrete because the concrete could potentially be bad on your dogs feet.
Once you have the attention of dogs begins move around the bait, most dogs instinctively start to chase the bait. If your dog does not immediately begin play with the bait may need to come down and play with herself to raise your dogs desire to want the bait.
Once your dog is actively pursuing the bait it will begin to move in circles, sometimes allow the dog to catch the bait. If you do not let this happen the dog may loose interest in the bait, it is important to let the dog win sometimes to encourage his prey drive. This is a great time to practice your release command. Once the dog has his hand on the bait, you can shoot, I found that the older the dog gets less traction than I do. Once it has, I issue a command normally exit and try again.
Initially, it is important to keep the bait on the ground, once your dog is old enough and athletic enough, you can begin to whip the bait in the air. Of course, your dog will jump. This is a great way to exercise your dog. Be careful at first not to exercise your dog when you start to hold sessions less than five minutes, and added that increases in dogs conditioned your.
The flirt pole provides an inexpensive way to both exercise and training your dog. You will notice that the use of the tidy cluster will increase your dog agility and coordination.
