What is an effective way to teach a dog to walk on it?

I do not think the process will be neither quick nor easy. I want to train the dog that for security, etc. Any advice apprecriated!

Cut some hot dogs into small pieces. Standing, dog leash and food for treat at any time the dog is relaying on a leash. Once the leash is slack, put all the goodies on your left and you dog on the left side, the left will go in your right hand. Give the dog 4-5ft. the leaves. Say "heel" and start walking forward, allowing the dog to keep food in your left hand. Give your dog a treatment every 1 to 2 steps out of the stand next to you. As your dog gets the hang of it, to slow the flow power. Be sure to praise the dog too. If the dog starts pulling, stop walking and attract the dog to your side again. If the dog takes a lot which means you make things too difficult at first, they either work in an area with too many distractions or not providing enough rewards for good behavior.
