Canine assisted therapy (CAT) is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization founded in August 2009 to respond to the need for companionship for people in schools, nursing homes, palliative care, life assisted, and hospitals. Since the creation of detailed substantive organization controls were performed on all volunteers CAT and no other dog certifying organization in the counties of Broward and Palm Beach have been so diligent.

After the August 1 other agencies and organizations that invite volunteers in their schools can lose their licenses because the new law requires that persons working with children, the elderly and disabled in Florida are under more stringent background checks.

The legislation passed unanimously by the Legislature this last session was signed by Governor Charlie Crist, at the end of May. It applies to employees and volunteers in day care centers, assisted living facilities, agencies home care, and others working with children and vulnerable adults.

Recognizing Canine Assisted Therapy is consistent the new law ensures that the most vulnerable residents are protected. Canine Assisted Therapy Volunteers are encouraged to continue to a difference in the lives of children, seniors and members of our community involved. the organization's founders also want to ensure that these facilities are following the letter of the new law by bringing these wonderful dogs (and owners) in their homes and property.

Debra Mr. Berger is the executive director of the CAT has recently noted, "We are delighted to have many new volunteers because the other organizations treatments are unable or unwilling to comply with the new law. We also received many requests from institutions seeking our services because we are the only animal therapy organization that will be able to visit patients who are not accompanied by a staff member. "

With this new legislation, CAT is adding extra facilities Broward and Palm Beach each week.

CAT ( www.catdogs.org ) headquartered in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, offers certification and placement of dogs therapy and their masters in nursing homes, hospitals, group homes, schools and where there is a need the company of a dog. CAT has a Pack Reader program to help primary school children improve their reading skills by reading dogs. CAT has also recently launched the Teen Corp. in Oxford, Florida, where teenagers work with their dogs to train and prepare them for therapy work. CAT certification is valid and recognized throughout the United States.

Canine Assisted Therapy has been founded with the sole mission of providing a network of skilled, reliable, care therapy teams committed to providing a benefit therapy through the use of dogs for children and adults who need comfort, companionship, or the unconditional love that only a dog can provide. CAT is different from other organizations because of the AAT-depth testing of dogs for temperament suitable for therapy work, the volunteer placement in institutions, and general support of volunteers.
